About Us

Welcome! We are Science and Research Club of St. Joseph's College, Darjeeling. Since its establishment in 2019, it has motivated and inspired its members to learn and love science. Science club channelize the energies of students and makes use of their skills and talents, which satisfy their instincts and urges and helps in their overall personality development. It has acted as a bridge between the syllabus and out-of-syllabus learning and fosters the development of skills, such as experimentation, critical thinking, and problem solving. By giving our members a supportive environment to explore science, we are also building more confident learners and educators

Aims and Objectives

The aims and objectives of our Science and Research Club may outline as below.

To provide proper incentive and inspiration for the pursuit of scientific knowledge in rigorous way by broadening their scientific outlook. To make the students understand the value of time and to help them in its proper utilization.

  • To provide opportunities for bringing members close to the society and to acquaint the people with the services and contribution of the science in their life.

  • To develop among the student the spirit and attitude of healthy competition for the individual and social cause. To help the students in imbibing the habit of self-reliance, self-dependence and love for manual work.

  • To inculcate scientific attitude. To provide opportunity for the development of the constructive, explorative & inventive faculties of the students. To develop training in scientific method of problem solving.

  • To develop in students, interest and participation in the practical application of knowledge related to different branches of science. To grate interest in scientific facts and events related to one’s surroundings.

  • To develop interest in scientific hobbies. To encourage individual and group activities. To stimulate active participation and initiative among students in the learning process.

  • To develop the creativity and encourage the habit of exploration. To widen the outlook of students, apply the knowledge in life situations.

  • To create interest in latest inventions and discoveries of science in various fields and to get acquainted with the life history and contributions of great scientists.

Organization and structure

A properly organized science club will be a valuable aid to teaching science and also a means of motivating the members for learning science. The successful working of the club depends on the persons who organize it and also on the interest and enthusiasm of members. Though science club is run by the members for the members.

The board members include:

  1. Club Coordinator

  2. President

  3. Secretary

  4. Event Manager

  5. Treasurer

  6. Historian

  7. Web master

  8. Team Leader

  9. Asst. Team Leader

The duties of office bearers should be:

  • Club Coordinator: To be the bridge between the college authorities and the club.

  • President: To prescribe over the functions of the club and over the meetings of the board members. To motivate the members of the club.

  • Secretary: To maintain the minutes of the meetings of the club. To act as a bridge between the college councilors, superiors and the club. To conduct the meeting in absence of the President.

  • Event manager: Handle club events and activities efficiently.

  • Treasurer: To collect subscriptions/funds and maintain the accounts.

  • Historian: To be the bridge between the club alumni and present student members.

  • Web master: Manage the club website and magazine/s.

  • Team Leader: To maintain harmony in their respective teams, encourage the team members and lead their teams efficiently.

  • Asst. Team Leader: To help the Team Leader duly and be their advisor.

There should be regular meetings, discussions, planning, feedback etc. The responsibility of the taking initiative in the establishment of a science club in the college and then for its effective organization is essential.

Proposed Activities :

  • Quiz / Debate / Integration Bee on Science/Mathematics [On every 2nd Saturday or a fixed date in a month (8 times a year) as per convenience.

  • Nature Study – Field visit to Tiger Hill etc. in the vicinity of Darjeeling twice a year (Necessary fund may be arranged) or through contribution by members.

  • Observation of important days (viz. World Wetland Day on Feb 2nd, National Science Day on Feb 28th, World Health Day on April 17th, International Bio-diversity Day on May 22nd, World Environment Day on June 5th, Hiroshima & Nagasaki Day on 6th August &9th August etc.) to disseminate the importance of the said day among the members and acquaint them on the theme of the day of importance.

  • Essay Competition on the occasion of different important days or on life & works of Scientists (quarterly in a year in two groups ).

  • Publication of Science Wall Magazine and display of information received in Notice Boards exclusively for Science Club activities.

  • A specific period or day may be selected once in a quarter (e.g. every fourth Saturday of every fourth month) for organizing popular science lectures/audio visual shows etc. By inviting prominent scientists, our teachers and ex members to know their field of working and research.
